Las Kellies illustration, for Amelia’s Magazine, by Thomasina Smith

Proud to announce that my illustration of Las Kellies has been published on the Amelia’s Magazine website, alongside Richard Pearmain’s review of the band’s recent gig!

The gig was at Oslo Hackney, as Richard explains, this is owned by the same people behind Thekla in Bristol as well as others in Nottingham.

I wasn’t aware of the band before receiving the brief, but luckily Richard sent a link to some photos he had taken and uploaded to Flickr. Using these as a guide, together with Google’s help and listening to some of their tracks on iTunes, I put together a colourful, playful image that I feel helps to get the feel of their post-punk-with-Latin-twist style across.

I used dip pen and black ink to create the hand drawn images, before scanning these into Illustrator and turning them into vector graphics. I used my Wacom drawing tablet to edit and add elements. Using one of Las Kellies’ album covers as rough guide I played around with lots of colour schemes until I reached the effect I wanted to achieve.

I put together 2 variations of the illustration but decided to go with the more colourful option when submitting the work.

The final article can be viewed here.
